Special Fire Fighting Procedures:  Wear a NIOSH/MSHA approved self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.  Cool containers exposed to fire with water.

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards:  OXIDIZER.  This substance is an oxidizer and its heat of reaction with reducing agents or combustibles may cause ignition.  Under fire conditions and at high temperatures, highly toxic oxides of nitrogen are emitted.

 

 

V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of samarium nitrate have not been thoroughly investigated and reported.

Lanthanides can cause delayed blood clotting leading to hemorrhages.  Exposure may also lead to sensitivity to heat, itching, increased awareness of odor and taste, and liver damage.

Small doses of nitrates may cause weakness, general depression, headache and mental impairment.  Larger doses may cause dizziness, abdominal cramps, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, convulsions and collapse.

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  Due to its acidity, this product may cause difficulty breathing, chronic bronchitis, chemical pneumonitis, or emphysema.

Ingestion:  MODERATE TOXICITY BY INGESTION.  Due to its acidity, this product may burn the mouth, throat and stomach.

Skin:  SLIGHT SKIN IRRITATION.  Similar rare earth nitrates in solution cause slight irritation to rabbit skin.

Eye:  SEVERE EYE IRRITANT.  Similar rare earth nitrates in solution cause severe injury to rabbit eyes.

Symptoms may be delayed 4-30 hours.

Chronic Effects:

Nitrates, in general, are not a direct toxicant but are a health hazard because of their conversion to nitrites which in turn cause methemoglobinemia.

Medical Conditions Aggravated by Overexposure:  Skin and respiratory disease; blood disorders.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove from exposure, seek immediate medical attention.

INGESTION:  GET IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING.  If conscious, give large quantities of water.  Seek immediate medical attention.

SKIN:  Wash with soap and water and a large volume of water for 15 minutes.  Remove any contaminated clothing.  Thoroughly clean contaminated clothing and shoes before reuse.  Seek medical assistance as necessary, especially if irritation develops or persists.

EYES:  Flush with copious amounts of water for 15 minutes.  Eyelids should be held away from the eyeball to ensure thorough rinsing.  Get medical attention if irritation persists.

 

 

VI.   REACTIVITY DATA

Stability:  Stable

Conditions to Avoid:  Avoid high temperatures, reducing agents, organic matter, moisture.

Incompatibility (Materials to Avoid):  Reducing agents, strong bases, combustible materials, high concentrations of organic matter, metal powders.

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  Metal oxide fume, nitrogen oxides.

Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur.

 

 

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate protective gear.  Sweep up into container for disposal or recovery.  Avoid creating dusting conditions.  Ventilate area.  Clean spill area with soda ash slurry and sweep into a drum for disposal.

Waste Disposal Method:  Dispose of in accordance with Local, State and Federal regulations.

 

 

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection (Specify Type):  Under conditions requiring respiratory protection use a NIOSH/MSHA approved air purifying respirator with particulate filter and acid gas cartridges.

Ventilation:  Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at low levels.

Protective Gloves:  Impervious gloves

Eye Protection:  Chemical workers goggles.  Do not wear contact lens.

Other Protective Equipment:  Protective work clothing.

 

 

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  OXIDIZER. SEVERE EYE AND MUCOUS MEMBRANE IRRITANT.  Do not get in eyes, on skin or clothing.  Do not breathe dust, vapor, mist, or gas.  Keep container closed.  Keep away from heat, sparks and open flames.  Store in tightly closed containers at ambient temperatures.  Do not store near strong reducing agents or organic materials (such as paper, wood).  Do not store in ordinary steel containers.  Empty container may contain hazardous residues.  Flammable solid.  Wash hands thoroughly after handling.  Do not drink or eat or smoke in the work area.

Other Precautions:  Dry powders can build static electricity charges when subjected to the friction of conveying, mixing or sliding.  To prevent ignition, provide adequate precautions, such as electrical grounding, or inert atmospheres when material is used in the presence of flammable materials.

Warning Statements:  Oxidizer.  Severe Eye and mucous membrane irritant.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain a sink, safety shower and eyewash fountain in the work area.  Have oxygen readily available.
