Extinguishing Media:  Non-combustible.  Use extinguishing media appropriate for surrounding materials and type of fire.

Special Fire Fighting Procedures:  No special firefighting procedures needed.  Use normal procedures which include wearing NIOSH/MSHA approved self-contained breathing apparatus, flame and chemical resistant clothing; hats, boots and gloves.  If without risk, remove material from fire area.  Cool container with water from maximum distance.

Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazard:  When heated to decomposition, tin oxide may emit acrid smoke and irritating fumes.

 

 

V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of tin oxide have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.

Tin compounds have variable toxicity.  Elemental tin and inorganic tin compounds have low toxicity and are poorly absorbed when ingested.  Some inorganic tin salts are irritating or can liberate toxic fumes on decomposition.  The latter is particularly  true of tin halogens.  (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial materials)

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause irritation of the upper respiratory system.

Ingestion:  Poor absorption makes it relatively non-toxic.

Skin:  May cause irritation.

Eyes:  May cause irritation.

Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause pneumonoconiosis.

Ingestion:  None recorded.

Skin:  None recorded.

Eye:  None recorded

Routes of Entry:  Inhalation, skin, and eyes

Medical Conditions, if Any, Aggravated by the Chemical:   Pre-existing respiratory disorders.

Target Organs:  May affect the respiratory system.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air; keep warm and quiet; give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

INGESTION:  Seek medical attention.

SKIN:  Remove contaminated clothing, flood skin with large amounts of water.  If irritation persists seek medical attention.

EYE:  Immediately flush eyes, including under eyelids, with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes.  Call a physician.

 

 

VI.   REACTIVITY DATA

Stability:  Stable

Conditions to Avoid:  Thermal decomposition.

Incompatibles (Materials to Avoid):  Aluminum, potassium, magnesium, sodium, ClF3, HS3, acids, oxidizing agents, alkali metals, interhalogens.

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  Tin and SnO2

Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur.

 

 

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective gear specified in section VIII.  Isolate spill area and provide ventilation.  Scoop or vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal.   Take care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method:  In accordance with Local, State and Federal waste disposal regulations.

 

 

 

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection:  NIOSH approved dust respirator.

Ventilation:  Local exhaust ventilation may be necessary to control any air contaminants to within the PEL or TLV during the use of this product.  Good general ventilation is recommended.

Eye/Face Protection:  ANSI approved safety goggles.

Protective Gloves:  Rubber

Other Protective Equipment:  Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

 

 

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Other Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Keep container tightly closed.  Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.  Wash thoroughly after use.

Other Precautions:  Lab coat and apron, flame and chemical resistant coveralls, eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and hygienic facilities for washing.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing with compressed air.
