Silver Foil

silver foil

MATERIAL OVERVIEW

Silver foil is a form of ‘metal leaf’, also called ‘composition leaf’ or ‘schlag-metal’, which is a thin foil used for research, decoration or any other applicable application for foil. Metal leaf is often made of gold (including many alloys), silver, copper, aluminum, brass palladium and occasionally platinum. Vark is a type of silver leaf used for decoration in Indian cuisine. Goldbeating, the technique of producing metal leaf, has been known for more than 5,000 years.

ESPI provides silver foil and sheet, mostly for research and industrial applications, and are manufactured by hot or cold rolling through industrial roll mills. The rolling process involves incrementally reducing thickness of the material through successive passes between the rollers. ESPI provides silver foil products customarily rolled between .001” to .009” thicknesses, where silver sheet is normally rolled in .010” and above, up to ½”.

HOWEVER, ESPI'S RESPONSIVENESS TO ANY CUSTOMER'S UNIQUE SPECIFICATIONS, ENABLES US TO MANUFACTURE TO NEARLY ANY CUSTOM REQUIREMENT.

Characteristics:

Soft, ductile, lustrous white solid. Highest electrical and thermal conductivity of all metals. Resists oxidation, but tarnishes in air through reaction with atmospheric sulfur compounds. Absorbs oxygen strongly at melting point. Soluble in nitric acid, and alkali cyanide solutions, insoluble in water and alkalies. Noncombustible, except as powder.

Hazards: Tolerance (metal) 0.1 mg/m3 of air; (soluble compounds, (as Ag), 0.1 mg/m3 of air)
