4   FIRST AID MEASURES

General Measures: Remove patient from area of exposure.

INHALATION: Remove to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult. Seek immediate medical attention.

INGESTION: Quickly wipe material from mouth and rinse with water. Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately.

SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing if necessary. Remove as much material from skin as possible by wiping with a dry cloth, then wash the affected area with large amounts of water until all material is removed. Seek medical attention.

EYES: Immediately flush eyes with copious amounts of water, including under eyelids for at least 10-15 minutes. A victim may need assistance in keeping their eyelids open. Seek immediate medical attention.

Most Important Symptoms/Effects, Acute and Delayed: May cause respiratory irritation, cough and difficulty in breathing if inhaled. May cause redness, pain and possible burns to eyes and skin. See section 11 for more information.

5   FIREFIGHTING MEASURES

Extinguishing Media: Use Class D dry powder extinguishing agent.

6   ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Personal Precautions, Protective Equipment, and Emergency Procedures: Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section 8. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Avoid breathing dust or fume. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Eliminate all sources of ignition.

Methods and Materials for Containment and Cleaning Up: Scoop dry solids into a dry metal container, properly label and cover. Do not use water for spill clean-up. Use only non-sparking tools and natural bristle brushes.

Likely Routes of Exposure: Inhalation, skin and eyes.

Symptoms of Exposure: May cause respiratory irritation, cough, difficulty in breathing, and chemical pneumonitis if inhaled, irritation or burns to the mouth, throat, and stomach if swallowed. May cause vomiting. Contact with skin will cause irritation and possible corrosion damage. Substance is severely irritating to the eyes and may injure eye tissue if not promptly removed.

Acute and Chronic Effects: Calcium will react with water or moisture causing heat. If calcium metal contacts moisture in the eyes, on the skin, or in the respiratory tract, severe corrosive irritation may result. The fumes evolved by burning calcium in air are composed of calcium oxide which is an irritant to the skin, eyes and mucous membrane. Generally speaking, calcium compounds should be considered toxic only when they contain toxic components or as calcium oxide or hydroxide. Calcium compounds are common air contaminants.
