Extinguishing Media:  Use water, carbon dioxide, dry chemical extinguishing agents, dry sand, or dry ground dolomite.

Special Fire Fighting Procedures:  No special firefighting procedures needed.  Use normal procedures which include wearing NIOSH/MSHA approved self-contained breathing apparatus, flame and chemical resistant clothing; hats, boots and gloves.  If without risk, remove material from fire area.  Cool container with water from maximum distance.

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards:  Can cause fire by oxidation of combustible materials.

 

 

V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of sodium chromate have not been thoroughly investigated and reported.

Sodium chromate is an experimental carcinogen.  It is highly toxic if ingested or inhaled.  Corrosive to skin, eyes and mucous membranes.  Can cause ulceration of skin, hands and nasal septum.  Recognized carcinogen of lungs, nasal cavity and paranasal sinus.

Acute and Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  Dusts are extremely irritating to the throat and bronchial tubes.  May cause cancers of the lungs, nasal cavity, sinuses, stomach and larynx.

Ingestion:  May cause gastrointestinal irritation with vomiting and diarrhea, kidney and liver damage.  Overexposure may be fatal.

Skin:  May cause ulcerations of the skin.

Eye:  Irritating

 

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult.  Seek immediate medical advice. 

INGESTION:  Seek immediate medical attention.

SKIN:  Remove any contaminated clothing, immediately wash with water and soap and rinse thoroughly.  Seek immediate medical advice.

EYES:  Flush with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes.  Consult a physician.

Conditions to Avoid:  Material is deliquescent.  Protect from exposure to moisture in air.

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in Section VIII-Special Protection Information.  Isolate spill area, provide ventilation and extinguish sources of ignition.  Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.  Use non-sparking tools.

Waste Disposal Method:  Consult Local, State, and Federal Regulations for proper disposal procedures.

 

 

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection (Specify Type):  NIOSH/MSHA approved high efficiency particulate respirator for ordinary use and self-contained breathing apparatus for emergency use.

Ventilation:  Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at low exposure levels.

Protective Gloves:  Impervious gloves.

Eye Protection:  Chemical safety goggles and face shield.

Other Protective Equipment:  Lab coat and apron, flame and chemical resistant coveralls, protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

 

 

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Keep container tightly closed.  Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.  Wash thoroughly after use.  This product contains a chromium compound which is subject to the reporting requirements of section 313 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 and 40 CFR 372.

Precautionary Labeling:  Danger!  Carcinogen!  Highly toxic by ingestion and inhalation.  Corrosive to skin.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and hygienic facilities for washing.
