V.   HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of yttrium sulfide have not been thoroughly investigated and reported.

Yttrium is similar to the lanthanons and may have an anticoagulant effect on blood. Exposure to lanthanons may also lead to sensitivity to heat, itching, increased awareness of odor and taste, and liver damage.

Sulfides show variable toxicity. The alkaline sulfides are similar in action to alkalies. They cause irritation of the skin and are corrosive by ingestion. The heavy metal sulfides are generally insoluble and show little toxic action except through the liberation of hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide, if generated, is toxic, a severe irritant and flammable. Effects include conjunctivitis, headache, nausea, dizziness, coughing, pulmonary edema and possibly death.

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause severe irritation and damage to the respiratory system.

Ingestion:  May cause severe gastrointestinal irritation.

Skin:  May cause severe irritation to moist skin due to the liberation of hydrogen sulfide.

Eye:  May cause severe irritation.

Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause pneumonitis, pneumoconiosis, coma and pulmonary edema.

Ingestion:  No chronic health effects recorded.

Skin:  No chronic health effects recorded.

Eye:  No chronic health effects recorded.

CarcinogenicityNTP:  No     IARC:  No    OSHA:  No

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION:  Remove victim to fresh air.  Keep warm and quiet.  Give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention.

INGESTION:  Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and DO NOT induce vomiting.  Seek immediate medical attention.

SKIN:  Remove contaminated clothing.  Brush material off skin and wash affected area with mild soap and water.  Seek medical attention.

EYES:  Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical attention.

VI.   REACTIVITY DATA

Stability:  Decomposition will not occur if used and stored according to specifications

Conditions to Avoid:  Water/moisture, ignition sources, open flame.

Incompatibility (Material to Avoid):  Acids, oxidizing agents, water/moisture

Hazardous Decomposition Products:  Contact with water releases hydrogen sulfide.

Hazardous Polymerization:  Will not occur.

VII.   SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled:  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in Section VIII.  Isolate spill area and provide ventilation.  Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.  Do not flush with water or aqueous cleaning agents.  Keep away  from ignition sources.

Waste Disposal Information:  In accordance with Federal, State and Local waste disposal regulations.

VIII.   SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection (Specify Type):  Full-mask air purifying respirator suitable for H2S.

Ventilation:  Handle in an inert gas such as argon in a controlled and enclosed process.  Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at low exposure levels.  General exhaust is not recommended.

Protective Gloves:  Impervious gloves

Eye Protection:  Safety glasses, full face protection.

Other Protective Clothing or Equipment:  Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX.   SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage:  Handle under dry protective gas.  Keep container tightly sealed.  Store in cool, dry place in tightly sealed containers.  Keep ignition sources away.  Protect against electrostatic charges.  Fumes can combine with air to form an explosive mixture.  Reacts with acids forming hydrogen sulfide.  Reacts with water to form hydrogen sulfide.  Do not store together with acids.  Store away from water/moisture, oxidizing agents.  Store under dry inert gas.  Protect from humidity and water.

Work Practices:  Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels.  Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices.  Do not use tobacco or food in work area.  Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking.  Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.  Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.

The above information is believed to be correct, but does not purport to be all inclusive and shall be used only as a guide.  ESPI shall not be held liable for any damage resulting from handling or from contact with the above product.
