Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards:  When heated to decomposition, silver bromide may emit toxic fumes of bromine.




Health Hazards:

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of silver  bromide have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.

The absorption of silver compounds into the circulation and the subsequent deposition to the reduced silver in various tissues of the body may result in the production of a generalized grayish pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes, a condition know a argyreia.  The introduction of fine particles of silver through breaks in the skin produces a local pigmentation at the site of the injury.  1 mg/m3 of silver dust causes skin effects.  The condition develops slowly, usually after 2-25 years of exposure.  (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition)

The inorganic bromides produce depression, emaciation, and, in severe cases, psychosis and mental deterioration.  Bromide rashes (bromodermal), especially of the face and resembling acne and furunculosis, often occur when bromide inhalation or administration is prolonged.  (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition).

Acute Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause irritation to the upper respiratory system, sneezing, coughing, difficulty breathing, depression, emaciation, altered respiratory rates, convulsions and in severe cases, psychosis and mental deterioration.

Ingestion:  May cause gastrointestinal disturbances, irritability, confusion, tremors, memory loss, slurred speech, anorexia and diarrhea.

Skin:  May cause irritation, skin lesions, acne-form eruptions and measle like eruptions.

Eye: May cause irritation.

Chronic Effects:

Inhalation:  May cause argyrosis, pulmonary edema, skin eruptions, bronchitis and kidney injury.

Ingestion:  May cause kidney injury.  Large doses may cause central nervous system depression.

Skin:  May cause argyrosis and dermatitis.

Eye:  May cause argyrosis.

Target Organs:  May affect the central nervous system, lungs, skin, eyes and kidney.

Signs and Symptoms of Exposure:

Inhalation:  May cause a red, dry throat, coughing, sneezing, difficulty breathing, depression, dizziness, headache and bluish-grey skin.

Ingestion:  May cause abdominal distress, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.

Skin:  May cause redness, burning, itching, bluish-grey skin and rashes that resemble acne and furunculosis.

Eye:  May cause redness, burning, itching and watering.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure:  Pre-existing respiratory and skin disorders.



INHALATION:  Remove victim to fresh air; keep warm and quiet; give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

INGESTION:  Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and induce vomiting; seek medical attention if symptoms persist.  Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

SKIN:  Remove contaminated clothing; brush material off skin; wash affected area with mild soap and water; seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

EYES:  Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes.  Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

Steps to Be Taken If Spilled or Released:  Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in Section VIII-Control measures.  Isolate spill area and provide ventilation.  Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal.  Take care not to raise dust.

Waste Disposal Method:  In accordance with governmental regulations.
