4   FIRST AID MEASURES

General Measures: Remove patient from area of exposure.

INHALATION: Remove to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult. Seek medical attention.

INGESTION: Rinse mouth with water. Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical attention. Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash affected area with soap and water. Seek medical attention if irritation develops or persists.

EYES: Flush eyes with lukewarm water, including under upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation develops or persists.

Most Important Symptoms/Effects, Acute and Delayed: Inhalation of aluminum dust or powder may cause irritation to the respiratory system. See section 11 for more information.

Indication of Immediate Medical Attention and Special Treatment: No other relevant information available.

5   FIREFIGHTING MEASURES

Extinguishing Media: Use gentle surface application of Class D or dry, inert granular material such as sand to cover and ring the burning material.

Unsuitable Extinguishing Media: Do not use water, halogenated or ABC dry chemical agents.

Specific Hazards Arising from the Material: Fine dust dispersed in air in sufficient concentrations, and in the presence of an ignition source, is a potential dust explosion hazard. Powder or dusts in contact with water may release flammable hydrogen gas. If powder or dusts come into contact with certain metal oxides (such as iron oxide or copper oxide) a thermite reaction can be initiated by a weak ignition source. May release aluminum oxide fume if involved in a fire.

Special Protective Equipment and Precautions for Firefighters: Wear full face, self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing.

6   ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Personal Precautions, Protective Equipment, and Emergency Procedures: Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section 8. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Avoid breathing dust or fume. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Eliminate all sources of ignition.

Methods and Materials for Containment and Cleaning Up: Avoid dusting of powder to the greatest extent possible. Use only non-sparking tools and natural bristle brushes. Place carefully in dry water-tight sealed containers. Do not use water for spill clean-up. After complete clean-up by sweeping, area may be washed with large amounts of water if necessary.

Environmental Precautions: Do not allow to enter drains or to be released to the environment.

7   HANDLING AND STORAGE

Precautions for Safe Handling: Handle under dry protective gas if possible. Air and moisture sensitive. Take precautionary measures against static discharge. Protect from sources of ignition. Do not co-mingle fines or dusts of aluminum with fines or dusts of iron, iron oxide (rust), or other metal oxides. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking. See section 8 for information on personal protection equipment.

Conditions for Safe Storage: Store in a cool, dry area. Store material tightly sealed in properly labeled containers, preferably under argon. Protect from water/moisture. Do not store together with metal oxides or oxidizers. Store away from heat and ignition sources. See section 10 for more information on incompatible materials.

8   EXPOSURE CONTROLS AND PERSONAL PROTECTION

Exposure Limits:     Aluminum

OSHA/PEL:               5 mg/m3 - respirable

ACGIH/TLV:             1 mg/m3 - respirable

Engineering Controls: When working with finely divided powders, handle under argon in a controlled, enclosed environment. Ensure adequate ventilation to maintain exposures below occupational limits. Whenever possible the use of local exhaust ventilation or other engineering controls is the preferred method of controlling exposure to airborne dust and fume to meet established occupational exposure limits. Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air.

Individual Protection Measures, Such as Personal Protective Equipment:

Respiratory Protection: Use suitable respirator when high concentrations are present.

Eye Protection: Safety glasses

Skin Protection: Impermeable gloves, protective work clothing as necessary.

10   STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

Reactivity: No specific test data available.

Chemical Stability: Stable under recommended storage conditions.

Possibility of Hazardous Reactions: Fine dust dispersed in air in sufficient concentrations, and in the presence of an ignition source, is a potential dust explosion hazard. In the form of chips, fines or dust aluminum may react with water, acids, or alkalis to generate flammable hydrogen gas. May react violently with oxidizers to generate considerable heat. Can react explosively with nitrates when heated or molten.

Conditions to Avoid: Heat, sparks, flame. Dusting conditions. Exposure to moisture.

Incompatible Materials: Water, oxidizers, acids and alkalis, halogens, iron oxides and other metal oxides, iron powder and water.

Hazardous Decomposition Products: Aluminum oxide fume, hydrogen gas.

11   TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Likely Routes of Exposure: Inhalation, skin and eyes.

Symptoms of Exposure: May cause irritation. Inhalation of finely divided powder has been reported as a cause of pulmonary fibrosis

Acute and Chronic Effects: There is strong evidence that aluminum (compounds) can cause irritation following exposure via either inhalation or injection. Modest evidence of an effect exists for reproductive toxicity following oral exposure, for neurological toxicity following either oral or injection exposure, and for bone toxicity following injection exposure. All other effects were judged to be supported by either limited evidence or no clear evidence at all.1

Acute Toxicity: No data

Carcinogenicity: NTP: Not identified as carcinogenic   IARC: Not identified as carcinogenic

To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological characteristics of the substance are not fully known.
