Lead

MATERIAL OVERVIEW

Characteristics: Heavy, ductile, soft gray solid. Soluble in dilute nitric acid, insoluble in water but dissolves slowly in water containing a weak acid, resists corrosion and is relatively impenetrable to radiation. Poor electrical conductor; good sound and vibration absorber. Noncombustible.

Hazard: Lead and lead compounds are chronic health hazards when ingested or inhaled. OSHA workplace exposure limits: 50 µg/m3 TWA. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined lead and lead compounds to be possibly carcinogenic to humans.

ESPI manufactures lead into sheets, foils, rods and wire. Thicknesses and diameters of up to 1”, in increments of 0.001”, are possible.
